Southern Alberta Sport and Exercise Medicine Physicians
They work with acute, degenerative, and overuse joint and muscle problems and assist with diagnosis, additional testing, and specialized treatment recommendations. SEM Physicians treat individuals of all ages and physical abilities.
What are SEM Physicians?
Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Physicians are family physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, paediatricians, physiatrists (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), emergency medicine physicians, and other specialists who have unique additional training in the specialty of SEM for the prevention and treatment of sport and artistic, physical activity-related injuries and conditions.

Their credentials may include the following:

- The Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine Diploma of SEM, Dip. Sport Med.
- A CCFP Certificate of Added Competency in SEM, CCFP(SEM)
- A FRCP or FRCS Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Diploma in SEM

You have been referred to Southern Alberta Sport and Exercise Medicine Physicians

Our assessment team reviews all incoming referrals. Since wait times are variable, you will be offered an appointment based on the appropriate time frame suggested by the information in the referral.

We will notify your referring practitioner when your referral has been accepted and with your approximate wait time for an appointment.

We will telephone you to schedule an appointment approximately 4 – 6 weeks before your appointment.

Once your appointment is confirmed, we will:

Email you a parking pass and directions to our clinic.

Send you a link to complete any required intake forms for your appointment.

You will receive a reminder three business days before your appointment by our automated system.

If you cannot attend your appointment, you must notify us by telephone as soon as possible to be eligible to reschedule it.
What to expect at your appointment with a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician
Your appointment will be a comprehensive assessment, including:

completion of a physical examination
Please make sure you wear loose-fitting clothing so you can freely move during your appointment. The physician will discuss your diagnosis, order necessary imaging or tests, and recommend a treatment plan.
